What is Title I?Title 1 is a federal program authorized by the Every Student Succeeds Act or ESSA.
What is a Title I School?
Title I schools receive extra federal funding to help students succeed in reading and math. Schools qualify for this funding when they have a high number of students who receive free or reduced-price meals. You may hear this called "Free and Reduced Meal Student or FARMS" eligibility.
How does Title I help students?
Title I schools use the extra money to provide additional support, such as:
- Extra reading and math teachers
- Small group instruction or one-on-one tutoring
- Before-school, after-school, or summer learning programs
- Technology and learning materials
- Training for teachers to use the best teaching methods
Who gets Title I support?
Title I programs focus on students who need the most help to meet grade-level standards in reading and math. The goal is to close achievement gaps and ensure all students have the opportunity to succeed.
How can parents get involved?
Title I schools encourage parent and family participation through:
- Family engagement events and workshops
- Parent-teacher meetings about student progress
- Opportunities to give input on how Title I funds are used
- Resources to help support learning at home
What makes Title I different?
Title I funding is extra—it doesn't replace regular school funding. It's specifically designed to give students who are behind additional help to catch up and thrive academically.
